I found a space in my office for three paintings, 12"x12". The background is white so I thought of doing a series about the famous Japanese gates, called Toriis. This is the first one of this series, with a amical wink towards Jin7.
In 2011, I visited the Torii at the Itsukushima shrine near Hiroshima, Japan (see alternative picture (I had less grey hair there in those days!)) which can only be visited a few hours a day since most of the time, the tides have flooded the area.
The painting was prepared with white gesso, red acryl and finished with black markers. Please enjoy, arigato!
Wonderful minimalist painting. And a really cool picture.!
You are way too kind for me Felix!!
That pic was taken on my second trip to Japan doing flight inspections for KLM - Air France. I decided to spend a few days in the Hiroshima area then. I had visited Osaka and Kyoto on an earlier trip. Japan is in my personal top 5 of best countries visited!!
Oh yes, mine too! I've been to Tokyo, Kyoto and a small Ryokan and Onsen in Hakone (a small town next to a lake a few kms from Mt Fuji).
One of the best trips of my life!
Gosh! You've been near Mt. Fuji?!!! Now I am SO jealous!! .... healthy jealous of course!!
Thanks for the support Felix, tomorrow the second one will be posted. Till then!
Voy, looking forward to see continuation and full set hang up on the wall. It should be absolutely fantastic to see these 3 designs grouped together.
By the way I was thinking about the birds, I think it is great you added them and showed the picture without the birds, without them is quite empty. Red color is amazing!
Thank you Sunnylady!! I was even thinking, should I have let those birds fly out (of fly in from outside the frame) of the frame? I could add some more you know!
The chosen red was Scarlet, an acrylic colour which I never used before.
Danke schün Tom, I have almost finished working on the other two so those will be uploaded still this week!
Till soon!
Yes, we've got up at 6:00 a.m. and took the bus to a cablecar station next to Lake Ashi. We took the cable car up a mountain there to get a good view at Mt Fuji. Only problem is that Mt Fuji didn't want to be seen.
There was so much mist we couln't even see our own hands if we held them out in front of us. After 2 minutes up there we were completely soaked from all the mist in the air.
Darn, such bad luck! Reminds me that in 2012, we wanted to visit table mountain in Capetown ... the only week that the cable car had its yearly maintenance!!! Raaah!!!!!
Luckely we had Robben island as a replacement visit!
Thanks a lot dear my friend Voy Kay. I am always fan of your work!
Simply beautiful.
Great to see you here Jin, I missed you!
I thought of painting something Japanese style but with silhouettes.
Would you think I need to paint the flock of birds right towards the edge of the frame?

I forgot to mention that the painted torii is NOT the same as the one I visited in Japan. It's is a reference only.
